Zapiro Volunteer Outing

Current Scalabrini Volunteers posing with Zapiro's life-size Mandiba puppet at the South African Jewish Museum

On Tuesday September 27th the Scalabrini volunteers went to see the Zapiro exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum. The exhibit was called Jiving with Madiba which showcased Mandela’s life through the work of the famous cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro aka Zapiro. At first when entering the South African Jewish museum we went into the oldest synagogue in South Africa and received an impromptu Jewish history lesson. Afterwards we went to the exhibit on Zapiro, which featured over 130 of  Zapiro’s cartoons with topics ranging from work he did for the ANC to Mandela’s childhood. The exhibit also featured video interviews from Zapiro himself talking about his work. It was interesting to hear about the history of South Africa from a satirical viewpoint. I think that the exhibit encouraged everyone to learn more about South Africa’s political background and the struggles it has faced as a country.
