Greetings all. I am Waheeda and I teach Elementary English twice a week at Scalabrini. I  am a Capetonian, married with 3 children. I was looking to utilize my limited free time in a manner that would benefit society. I met Miranda (director of Scalabrini) last year, and the rest, as they say, is history…

The staff here are friendly, ever-helpful and reassuring. I feel indeed valued and needed. What was unexpected to me, however, was that I would be the one benefitting from this experience! I have only been volunteering since February, but teaching here has enriched my life considerably. I am reminded of how fortunate I am, of the things we take for granted that these refugees/ foreigners have to strive and struggle for, all the while bearing smiles.

This consciousness spills into other aspects of my life – spiritual, mental, emotional. For me, Scalabrini symbolizes the spirit of humanity, be it from the people seeking help or the ones offering it.

In conclusion, I would just like to say that I’m very happy to be a part of this organisation albeit in a limited capacity. I shall endeavour doing so for a long time.
