Hi! I’m a 23-year-old recent college graduate from the US. I attended Emory University in Atlanta, GA and studied English and sociology. I plan on entering law school next fall to study human rights law, but wanted to gain hands-on experience working with human rights issues first. I decided to take a gap year and come to South Africa for its history and culture regarding human rights. My undergraduate studies made me aware of the difficulties that refugees and asylum seekers face and volunteering Scalabrini has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding. I am already amazed by the strength and courage of all the refugees with whom I have had the opportunity to work at the Employment Help Desk. I am inspired not only by their perseverance, but by their joy and graciousness in beginning a new life in Cape Town. I am excited to see what the rest of my time at Scalabrini will bring!
